Concepts maps is a powerful way for students to reach high levels of cognitive performance, helping to learn how to organize and represent knowledge.
And even more!
They can be a great tool for
educators to measure the growth of and assessing student learning.Concept maps begin with a main idea and then branch out to show how that main idea can be broken into specific topics.
To understad this better, lets show an example.
If you know that your project is going to be about trees then that word will be going at the top of the topic. But if you just know that you have to think about material made or objects in nature then you should start by Brainstorm a list of concepts related to this idea like this one below.
Once you´ve brainstormed a list of concepts related to your project, you can choose the concept that is most essential to all of the others.
In this case, the word is "Trees"
We will now draw arrows, extending downward to the right and left that will connect to the next two most important words "Oxygen" and "Wood."
Finally, we have to connect these words to terms that will become more specific as well as explain the relationship between these in a word or two.
And here it is!
